Writing Down Target Numbers

November 8, 2009

What drives employees to hit sales numbers? Is it their overbearing boss? Is it their fear of being canned on the spot? The fear of living down to the life expectations others have labeled them with? To say there is one key factor that motivates employees is a false statement, yet many people tend to think that there are only a handful of items that get actions flowing into results.

Each and every person is motivated differently than the person sitting next to them. For me I am motivated by appreciation of a job well done and money. For others the motivations might be money, job satisfaction, or job appreciation. Whatever it is if you want to be successful you have got to realize your main motivations.

Once the motivation factor is in place I have always found hitting my numbers easier. Being that I am motivated by the appreciation factor I tend to set higher goals than what my superiors have set for me. Why? Simple, I love the praise in being the man. When I hit my number and exceed it not only do I maintain being the man but I get money. I get paid extra money for doing my job.

I hit my numbers by utilizing what motivates me and keeping track of my monthly progress. Too many individuals fail to plan and by doing so, as the saying goes, they plan to fail. Not me. I’m a visual kind of guy and I love the comparisons of my numbers to the rest of the office. Why? I get results but I did not start out in that fashion.

I struggled in the very beginning because I knew what my goal was but I failed to put pen to paper and write it down. Seemingly as soon as I was physically able to see the numbers I had jotted down this is when my budget, my number, my target, whatever you want to call it became real to me. I was able to double my production within a matter of 22 days because I went from knowing my numbers to living them.

If you were like me and are currently struggling the time is now to take out a blank piece of paper, a pen, and write your numbers down. Know what you need to hit, write down the number you want to hit, and put your motions into actions. Seeing is believing and after you’ve taken the necessary steps I want you to contemplate how you will be spending your bonus checks from here on out.
